“Serendipity is one of those ideas we all carry with us. Almost everyone has a story tied to it, though we rarely talk about it — perhaps because it already feels like part of who we are. A meeting, a glance, a chill on the skin. The right place at the right time. We often call it serendipity when we feel lucky. But strangely, we say the same when things go wrong — the wrong time, the wrong place. To me, life is made up of moments like these. Moments of serendipity. Small ones, big ones, life-changing ones — and each one quietly shapes our daily path. Lucky are those who dive into these moments without fear, who swim with the current of the unknown. Even when they don’t know how things will turn out, they live fully, right then and there. There’s the serendipity of walking through an open door and finding something waiting on the other side. Or the simple delay that makes you miss a bus, only for it to lead you to the love of your life. A moment like a half-finished photograph, just waiting to be completed. But chance is rarely simple. It’s full of twists and turns, paths we don’t expect, and feelings we don’t always understand. In those moments, our whole body wakes up, full of questions: Was this meant to be? Is this destiny? Why me?
We ask as if answers should be clear, as if there must always be a reason. Two strangers, both in Florence, both crossing the same bridge at the same time — did the world lead them there? Was it serendipity that brought them together and sparked something lasting? Sometimes someone walks into your life and turns everything upside down. They move through your world like a storm — suddenly, you’re filled with passion, confusion, the urge to run away and hold on all at once. And you wonder: was this meant to happen, or was it just chance?
Then there are those brief, powerful meetings — the kind where you feel instantly connected, as though you’ve known each other forever. You realise you were brought together not to stay, perhaps, but to share something important. A message. A lesson. A moment. That too can be serendipity. A poem written during heartbreak, which becomes a great love song — was it sorrow or serendipity?
Even science has its own unexpected turns. Think of penicillin — a discovery made by accident. Doesn’t that show us that even logic and reason sometimes rely on chance? At the end of the day, what stays with us is the feeling that it had to happen. And we hold on to that belief like a quiet prayer, whispered to remind ourselves that we are meant to be exactly where we are.
Maybe that’s the real secret — to get on the train and simply enjoy the journey. To watch the view go by until the last stop. Some trains are more comfortable than others. The seats, the service, the pace — they vary. But the view is the same. And how we choose to see it? That’s up to us. Is it fair? I don’t know. Fairness is hard to measure. But the destination — that remains the same.
Serendipity is the soft dance life does around us. Sometimes it nudges us forward, other times it plays tricks. But maybe — just maybe — we are not just part of the story. Maybe we are the serendipity. And life is simply playing its favourite game.”
